Wonderful racing history through the early '60s and one of the biggest-muscled Corvettes--a Cobra killer. In amazingly good condition considering its tough life. An expensive Vette, but hey, there aren't many Vettes more desirable.

1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 Tanker coupe

Location: St. Charles, IL
Date: June 15, 2007
Sold at: $367,500

Lot# S63 S/N 30837S117511. Riverside Red/black vinyl. Odo: 40,010 miles. 327-ci 360-hp fuel-injected V8, 4-sp. N03 big tank option, Z06 package. Engine compartment clean, interior nicely finished in original-style black vinyl. Cond: 2+.

Sixty-three cars left the assembly line with the N03 big tank, and 199 were born as Z06s, making this one of the rarest of the breed. This was a lot of money for a Split-Window, but it was a reflection of both its rarity and its condition.

Lot# 17 - S/N 30837S109324. Saddle Tan/saddle tan leather. Odo: 50,647 miles. 327-ci fuel-injected V8, 4-sp. Quality older restoration with numerous awards. Door fit off, as with most Corvettes. Loaded with unique options, one of only 63 built with the big tank. Price paid had to have been some sort of record for ’63 split-windows, but considering the desirable options and unique history, it's only out of line by $25k or so—which will be quickly forgotten the first time out with the new owner.

The "Tanker" cost $1818.45 over the $4257.00 base coupe price in 1963. Even if you wanted to drive a long way between fill-ups that was a lot of money. Today, it is still a LOT of money.

Last seen at Mecum's St. Charles sale in October ’05, where it sold at $210,000 (CM# 39574). Oddly optioned, this car was special ordered by its first owner as a long-distance driver between his South Texas ranch and Houston. This was about as rare ’63s get, so the price paid was on the money.

1963 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 coupe
Company: Barrett-Jackson
Location: Scottsdale, AZ
Date: January 14, 2006
Sold at: $197,640

Lot# 1294 S/N 30837S115675. Saddle tan/saddle. 327/360, FI, 4-sp. One of 199 Z06 coupes, sold by the original owner. Restored in 1980, with nearly all parts redone. The repaint still shows well. Comes with the retail order form, bill of sale, owner's manual, and original dealer brochure. NCRS Top Flight, Duntov, Bloomington Gold. This car has been used as a reference by Noland Adams in his restoration guide. Cond: 2.

The seller's father bought him the car on June 4,1963. He has raced it, proposed to his wife in it, and driven it daily. What a story, and what a car. Well documented, and an important part of Corvette history. The car lacked the N03 "Big Tank" option, so this was a correct price. As only 63 cars had that otion, it would have taken this Z06 to another level altogether.
